Princess Diana: The People's Princess (and the people's fashion icon)

 Princess Diana: The People's Princess

(and the people's fashion icon)

Lady Diana Spencer (more commonly known as Princess Diana) rose to fame after her marriage to Prince Charles III (now the King). She quickly became beloved by all due to her kind nature and activism, something not normally seen from the royal family. Although Princess Diana tragically passed away in 1997, she is still seen as icon of her time. As if being a princess, activist, and stirring the pot amongst the royal family were not already enough to write Diana into the history books, she is also wildly popular for her fashion.

The British Royal family is notorious for protecting their image, down to the clothing they wear for a leisurely walk. Pre (and post) Diana, the royal family has not had a member who was inspiring any kind of fashion trend... and then came Lady Di. Diana was often seen wearing, what has now become a signature look, biker shorts and an oversized sweatshirt. She was the epitome of casual and cool that I'm sure made her that much more likable by the masses.

The Revenge Dress

One of the most scandalous pop culture events of the 90's is without a doubt when it became public knowledge that Prince Charles cheated on Princess Diana with Camilla Parker Bowles. The details of the scandal can be summarized to you (and slightly dramatized) in season 4 of the The Crown, but what I want to highlight is the outfit that came after. After the news of the prince's infidelity broke, Diana attended a dinner wearing a very sexy black dress (now popularly referred to as the "revenge dress"). This in itself was a scandal due to the usual strict dress code followed by the royal family, but a newly single Diana had other plans.

Diana in the 21st Century

It's been 26 years since Princess Diana passed away, but her memory lives on not only in her children William and Harry, but in her impact on fashion and pop culture. In a photoshoot for Vogue Paris, Hailey Bieber (formally Baldwin) transformed into Princess Diana. A series of pictures show her in outfits almost exactly replicating some of Diana's most iconic looks, including the previously mentioned biker shorts and oversized sweatshirt. Her name even lives on in high fashion with luxury brand Christian Dior renaming one of their most popular bags "Lady Dior" in honor of Diana who frequently was seen wearing the bag.

I personally believe "icon" is an overused term today, but Princess Diana is simply the embodiment of it. Her style, grace, and overall charm has made her an unforgettable force in the history of the British royal family, and the history of fashion.
