Top 10 Oscar Looks of All Time
My Top 10 Favorite
Oscar Looks
of All Time
In honor of the 95th Academy Awards being held recently, I thought I would take this moment to recognize what's really import - the clothes. Okay yes, the films are all great and an incredible art form in its own, but the red carpet before hand has some of the most incredible art there is. Each year the honorees of the award show are styled by some of the greatest designers in some of their greatest pieces of the year. With that said, here are some of my favorite looks that have been seen on the Oscars red carpet.
10.
This year at the 2023 Academy Awards, activist Malala wore a stunning silver sparkly gown by Ralph Lauren Collection. She was styled with jewelry that was previously born by Queen Soraya Tarzi of Afghanistan who was also an activist. I love how this gown is glamorous and flattering while also honoring Malala's culture. I would love to see more hooded gowns in the future of red carpets.

Dancer and actress Maddie Ziegler wore a ballgown by Giambattista Valli to her first Academy Awards in 2022. For a first-timer on this red carper, I think this was a perfect choice out outfit. The classic neckline and ballgown silhouette are perfectly regal for the Oscars, but the added bow-like details make it stand out. I especially love the necklace and bracelet that was paired with this dress, an all around perfect look.
8.
The "Pose" star wore a custom Christian Siriano ball gown to the 2019 Academy Awards. Being one of the only males to wear a gown on the red carpet... this definitely made a statement. I really appreciate the boldness and creativity of this ensemble. Men's formal wear has changed very little in the last century, and a nice fitting tuxedo is always easy on the eyes. However, I wish more people would take a note from Porter and be more daring on the red carpet.
7.
Cara Delevingne made her long awaited return to the red carpet at the 2023 Academy Awards in a red Elie Saab gown. Delevingne has been in the news recently for her ongoing battle with substance abuse, but with this look all that came to mind was how glamorous she looks. The high leg slit with the shoulder detail is a gorgeous take on a classic look. I also love that she's wearing a necklace with a strapless gown... since many stylists seem to have forgotten that you can.
6.
Scarlett Johansson wore a gorgeous, silver Oscar de la Renta gown to the 2020 Oscars, where she was nominated for two awards. I am a sucker for Oscar de la Renta gowns, and this one in particular is breathtaking and looks like it was made for Johansson (which is good, since it probably was.) I love that this gown is regal and completely on theme for the Oscars, but still has an unexpected touch with the sheer panelling. My one critique... where is the accessories?
5.
Gemma ChanGemma Chan is always serving an amazing look on the red carpet, and the 2019 Academy Awards was no exception. Chan wore a stunning Valentino gown in their signature pink color. Since this outfit, I think the Valentino pink has been a little overdone, but at the time it was refreshing to see on the red carpet. It looked especially flattering on the gorgeous Gemma Chan.
4.
First time Oscar nominee Paul Mescal wore a very cool Gucci suit on the red carpet. I know this isn't very exciting for a red carpet look, but I actually enjoy the understated glam. Like I mentioned earlier, men's formal wear isn't usually too exciting, but Mescal has managed to impress me. I love the flared pants and relaxed style of the bow-tie, and the red flower detail is an excellent touch. (I also could very much picture Harry Styles wearing this.)
3.
Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds look stunning in a princess-like ballgown at the 1958 Academy Awards. I absolutely love the style of this gown from the cap sleeves to the floral detail at the neckline. I especially enjoy the beautiful detail at the waist. Interestingly enough, through all of my research it was impossible to find the designer of this dress. Whoever the mystery designer is, cheers to them on this stunning piece.
2.
At the 1999 Academy Awards, Gwyneth Paltrow won Best Actress... but more importantly she was best dressed. The star looked so pretty in pink in a Ralph Lauren gown and matching shawl. Is this look a little plain? Yes. But I am a sucker for Ralph Lauren and this shade of pink, and I just think it is such a pretty look.
And for my favorite Oscars look of all time... Lupita Nyong'o in a gorgeous Calvin Klein pearl, halter gown. Calvin Klein is another designer that I am such a sucker for and this gown is just breathtaking. The intricate pearl detailing is so glamorous it is unlike any other gown I have seen. Of course, it helps that Lupita is gorgeous so everything looks amazing on her, but this dress in particular is stunning.
